‘Welcome to Country’ Road Signage

Creating Wangkangurru Yarluyandi signage that depicts whose country people are travelling through.

We all travel the roads of SA and you would’ve seen signs on the side of the road that depict whose country you are currently travelling through.

We have designed, manufactured and transported signage of Wangkangurru Yarluyandi to Birdsville where they currently await installation. We have three signs and the idea is for them to be erected on Wangkangurru Yarluyandi country on The Birdsville Track road as you head north, one on the Windorah Road coming from the east approaching Birdsville, and another sign to the erected on the Bedourie Road coming from the north approaching Birdsville.

Unfortunately, COVID-19 has hampered investigations into site locations so far.

Wangkangurru Yarluyandi ‘Welcome to Country’ Road Signage Design Concepts:

The images above are a good depiction of how the Wangkangurru Yarluyandi Road Signage has turned out. The ‘blue’ image shows the actual design with the ‘Wangkangurru Yarluyandi’ words not being broken by the panel joins, whilst the ‘rusty’ image shows the intended rusty metal appearance.

The main aims of the project:

  • To install signage that identifies Wangkangurru Yarluyandi country and Native Title boundaries at key centres in Queensland and South Australia.

  • Install signage throughout Wangkangurru Yarluyandi country highlighting Native Title boundaries.

  • Signage on the Birdsville Track and throughout Wangkangurru Yarluyandi Native Title land.

  • Large signage highlighting entry to Wangkangurru Yarluyandi country.

Value of the project to WYAC:

Welcome to Country signs provide a visible presence of Wangkangurru Yarluyandi People and culture and informs visitors of Wangkangurru Yarluyandi Native Title lands.

Location of signage:

It is proposed three sites are considered for Welcome to Country signs. These are on tracks and roads leading into Wangkangurru Yarluyandi country at Bedourie and Windorah in Queensland; and on the Birdsville Track in South Australia near Mungerannie.
